Regional workshop on “Promoting resource efficient bricks (REBs) in Southern region”

A regional workshop on the UNDP-GEF project titled ’Energy efficiency improvements in Indian brick industry’ was organized by TERI-Southern Regional Centre at Bangalore on 28 June 2010. The programme focused on the marketing of resource efficient bricks (REBs) such as hollow blocks and perforated bricks. It was attended by about 70 participants comprising brick kiln entrepreneurs, architects, builders, technology providers, financial institutions, and government organizations such as Central Public Works Department (CPWD) and Khadi and Village Industries Board (KVIB). The participants showed interest in gaining knowledge about the availability of technologies, product diversifications, and the market.

The workshop was followed by field visits on 29 and 30 June. On 29 June, about 30 participants visited three brick kiln units in the Malur brick cluster, which has initiated pilot production of REBs in their units. On 30 June, about 30 participants visited the Wienerberger Brick Industry Pvt Ltd located at Kunigal, which is a fully automated plant with an investment of about Rs 185 crore and is involved in the production of REBs, supplying these products mainly in the southern region. The participants also visited the Mason Training Centre at Wienerberger aimed at upgrading the skills of masons on new product usage.
